Get Ready for Digi Ready: First Steps and Future Results

WHAT WE ARE FOCUSING ON

In an era where daily life – from banking and accessing services to staying in touch with loved ones – increasingly relies on technology, being “digitally ready” is a vital part of active citizenship. Yet, many adults still face significant barriers to navigating this digital landscape confidently.

The DigiReady project was launched to bridge this exact gap. Our mission is to promote digital readiness among low-skilled and vulnerable adults, including the elderly, migrants, refugees and the unemployed. We believe that everyone, regardless of their starting point, deserves the confidence and capability to participate fully in modern society.

To achieve this, our focus is centred around two main pillars that aim to create a sustainable, inclusive impact:

  • Empowering the Learners: We focus on creating informal, supportive learning environments through targeted, hands-on workshops. The goal is to teach the practical use of everyday digital tools, helping participants overcome their hesitation and building the digital independence necessary for active societal inclusion.
  • Innovating for the Educators: We recognise that effectively supporting vulnerable learners requires specialised skills and adaptable approaches. Therefore, a major focus of our work is improving the digital competences of adult education trainers. By training educators to use practical, AI-based tools, we are enhancing their capacity to design customised, engaging learning experiences that truly resonate with adults who struggle with digital literacy.

Brought to life through the collaborative efforts of international partners in Germany (iberika Education Group), Poland (Danmar Computers) and Romania (TEST), DigiReady represents a shared commitment to an inclusive future. Ultimately, we are focusing all our efforts on ensuring that the digital transformation leaves no one behind, building resilience and capacity from the ground up.

WORKSHOP UPDATES

The first round of needs assessment workshops (Activity 2) has been completed across all three partner countries, providing the foundation for the project’s curriculum development. In Germany, workshops with migrant job seekers brought the challenges of the Job Centre online portal into focus, alongside the broader difficulty of navigating official systems written in difficult to understand German and administrative language. In Romania, sessions focused on seniors and the particular barriers that come with engaging with digital tools, such as making doctor appointments online, online banking or payments and communication challenges. In Poland, the workshop included a broad group of participants including migrants and refugees, unemployed individuals, single parents and caregivers, and adults over 60. They offered insight into how varied and intersecting circumstances shape digital exclusion. And similar to Germany and Romania, financial and e-government tasks are the highest priority for the participants. Alongside participant workshops, the project also consulted trainers working directly with these groups, adding a practitioner perspective that complements the learner experience. A recurring theme across the trainer workshops was the observation that many learners in these target groups face not only a lack of practical digital skills, but also a fear of making mistakes, which is compounded by an absence of reliable personal support networks to turn to when things go wrong. Taken together, the findings from all three national contexts are informing the next phase of our project and the design of practical, accessible training materials tailored to the needs of each group.

FINAL PROJECT RESULTS

The DigiReady project will result in the development of a set of practical, user-friendly digital learning resources tailored to the needs of vulnerable adult learners. Based on the needs assessment conducted in three countries, the partnership identified key challenges related to everyday digital tasks, such as accessing public services, communicating online, managing accounts, and ensuring online safety.

In response, the project will now focus to produce short, accessible tutorials designed for mobile use, using simple language and step-by-step visual guidance. These resources aim to support learners in gaining confidence and independence when using digital tools in their daily lives.
